A Roman rest

Water was an element that played an important role in Roman culture, with buildings being built for its medicinal use as the Romans promoted its use for therapeutic ends. This is the case of Alange Spa and the Montemayor Baths Spa – of great importance during the splendour of Roman culture.

The Alange Spa, located only 18 kilometres from the main city, Emerita Augusta (Mérida), was created in the 3rd century BC in honour of the goddess Juno. Two symmetrical circular spaces are conserved from those times – the eastern one for men and the western one for women – covered by semi-spherical domes and an oculus in the central area, which you can visit if you decide to go to the spa.

In 1993, the Roman thermal waters were declared a World Heritage Site as part of the Mérida archaeological site.

It is currently considered an important thermal resort and you can find a combination of traditional therapies and the most advanced hydro-therapy trends. Its waters are indicated for the treatment of conditions affecting the nervous and the musculoskeletal systems.

At the northern boundary of Extremadura with Salamanca you can enjoy another thermal resort of great importance: the Montemayor Baths Spa. Built by the Romans in the 2nd century BC due to the great importance of the therapeutic properties of the water in the area.
