One of the most beautiful spots in Las Hurdes is to be found between the Sierra de Gata mountains and the Ambroz hills - the "El Gasco volcano". For many years it was believed that this was the site of a now extinct volcano. However, more in-depth studies this century have thrown more light on the mystery: the crater was actually formed by a falling meteorite, the scorching temperatures of which melted the rock and scattered tonnes of rock over the surrounding area.

After finding out a little more about its history, you are bound to be enthralled by its charms, particularly because it is surrounded by virgin woodland, consisting of small oak trees and strawberry trees, covered in lichens and moss, giving the landscape its singular beauty. And from the highest parts of the site - which was declared a Site of Scientific Interest in 2003- there are splendid views of the source of the Chorro de la Meancera waterfall.
