The main function of this chapel is as an oratory for the pilgrims who come to Guadalupe from the north.
Also known as the chapel of Santa Cruz, the famous Ermita del Humilladero is found on the hill of Altamiras, about 4 kilometres from Guadalupe, on the road towards Navalmoral de Mata. It was declared a National Monument in 1931 and subsequently an Asset of Cultural Interest.
The chapel was built in the 15th century following the model used to construct the Mudéjar temple you are sure to have visited already in the Real Monasterio de Guadalupe, with a square layout and bull header and Gothic decoration on all four sides.
Although it has been remodelled several times, the chapel of El Humilladero still retains its essence, which in its day captivated illustrious figures who visited it, like Miguel de Cervantes, who offered up the bonds of his slavery in Algiers to the Virgen de Guadalupe.
If you stop to see the chapel, don't leave without strolling around the vicinity. You will discover a forest of oak, pine and chestnut trees with up to three hiking routes running through it. And if you go to the viewing platform near the chapel, you will be astonished by the impressive views of the village of Guadalupe and the Real Monasterio which you can see from it.
