Visit the ruins of what was one of the most important fortresses in Sierra de Gata: Eljas Castle.
In the centre of the tow of Eljas, we find the ruins of what was one of the most powerful fortresses during the protection of Alcántara: Eljas Castle. The date it was built is uncertain but it is supposed to date back to the Islamic period and probably to the end of the 9th century. It later underwent several remodellings, in the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries.Nowadays only two towers and part of the circular courtyard remain standing, as the castle was heavily damaged during the wars with Portugal during the 17th century.
